what about now
do we think that there will even be live region choirs allowed? I can’t imagine several hundred singers being able to rehearse and socially distance
Just to clarify, the recording platform is MusicFirst?
ditto to Sarah’s question
Do we know the times for those upcoming meetings?
Region Meetings are posted on the TMEA website
To follow up with what Sarah, is it possible to create a “virtual choir” through submissions with a conductors video for students to follow?
@ Saray Bayley … ALL TMEA events are canceled through January 10th. You may have the option of scheduling your Region Concert (if you are a region that does auditions and clinic/concert in the Fall) to late Spring.
if the events have been canceled how can we showcase the students work after the audition process? Virtual choir?
@Chuck Pineda … ALL auditions (band, choir, and orchestra) will utilize MUSIC FIRST as the audition platform
We are not allowed to use a lot of the online video chats (like Zoom) due to them not being CIPA compliant. We are limited to Google Meets.
Do we know the times of the 7/31 and 8/29 meetings yet?
Thank you, Lauren.
Josh -all MS region selections are different. So is the region able to upload the background tracks for our specific selections?
@Johanna Eppley … GREAT QUESTION! This will need to be addressed by Jed and Frank towards the end.
7/31 - 1-3 pm; 8/29 11 am to 1 pm (Sack lunch optional!)
Yes, backtracks for MS auditions can be utilized.
MusicFirst will be providing the platform. If you use MusicFirst, your campus account will not interface with TMEA's platform.
Virtual choirs is something that will be possible with lots of work "after" all the recordings are submitted. This will be discussed on August 29th.
Thanks Dinah. Great tips!
C. Mollyn Cole
Phenomenal. Thanks Dinah.
AMAZING TIPS! Thank you Dinah!
I literally just texted my AP in charge of master schedule and offered my help. She was so appreciative!! My offer was very well received.
You're awesome, Henrietta! :)
Can you send that out to us
My exact thoughts as well!
I'm assuming that all of this will be available later
I would love a copy of this
I was just going to screen shot it! Please send it to all of us.
Yes, please share this.
Awesome! Need that. Thank you.
Yes! Could we please get a copy of these materials?
We heard the chaos they live in, also.
I'd definitely LOVE a copy of all of these items. Even if it was posted to the TMEA website for us to download.
If possible, can this information be shared in the chat?
I would love copies of these things, too
We will post the "handouts" on the Connections page later today or in the morning.
Awesome! Thanks Frank!!
This is the pdf shown right now: www.nyssma.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/SEL-Music-Education-Advocacy.pdf
The students have to know you love them. That is essential to them learning and trying new things that are vulnerable and emotionally open. Thank you for these tools for us to look into.
Thank you, Frank! This is all great information. Thank you to all who put it together!
can you put the groups in written form? I missed writing down the first one.

We do SEL in my campus and now many other campuses are joining in. It's a great program!
my dogs think Sam's dogs are in the house and want to play! They keep looking for the barking! LOL! It's too funny.
The "tuners" and tutors.
The document is now in the TMEA Connections page. https://www.tmea.org/resources/town-hall-archive
Thank you Frank!
Aldine is 100% virtual for at least the first three weeks
HISD is 100% virtual until Oct. 16
the parents have the hardest time haha
We have to give our kids HOPE
They will follow our example
Yes, Sam. Music is JOY
Music is the best normal we can give these kids.
There are SOOO many things I've wanted to dive in depth into with my students that we "don't have time for" normally that could be thoroughly engaging and uplifting
schoology? is that what she mentioned? what is it?
great ideas Linda!
Schoology is a platform to attach video lessons and many other things
WeVideo is a great tool as well!
Mine too, LInda and we sent the finished products to our faculty so they could hear what we did. The audio was the background for a slideshow with their faces. I didn't attempt the videos, but this was something I could manage.
Schoology is an online learning platform similar to Google classroom or Canvas
Sight Reading Factory and an online Theory program (I used uTheory) are great! Trust me, your HS directors will THANK YOU!!!
we use Blackboard
SRF is awesome!
and I combined with S-Cubed and SRF
SRF is fantastic for differentiation as well!
Schoology is a Learning Management System where you can make assignments and house files / materials / resources. Video and audio options are available and embedded in the platform.
I use SRF along with tonesavvy.com
If you did Solo and Ensemble in the Fall would you want them to submit recordings for judge feedback so that they can have some kind of competition style opportunity or ability to feel like they are performing for someone
Consider incorporating MUSIC FIRST if at all possible … you be using it for your MS Region Choir auditions.
Smart Music has a number of resources available as well.
Great point! Will definitely check it out!
I'm excited to have MUSIC FIRST this fall with SRF as a component of it!
Yes! Our school has asked other MS directors in the district to be S&E judges for each other. We're going to exchange services that way.
Canvas is also a great platform. One can make assignments, quizzes, upload videos, and record yourself.
Rachel, what district are you with?
Great Good in Action
National Center on Safe Supportive Learning Environments
Rachel Lockard? I am with region 21
McCormick is at Thornton MS (CFISD)
thank you Ms. Menger! were those the only two that you mentioned?
Dr. Bob Morrison Arts ED New Jersey does so much!!
@Stacey Gallegos CASEL.org was also mentioned
All risers? Seated and standing?
GISD guidelines, not TEA
from what I understood
Are they keeping all materials (backpack, etc.) in their singer squares?
If your kiddos are 10 feet a part, when you fill the room, what happens to those other kiddos?
thank you @lance newman!
Would the singer square have a chair?
My kids love singing outside! They think it is great "disturbing" other classes.
How safe is it to sing outside?
This is off topic-but how do copyrights work when you perform virtually?
So are students singing with masks? Shields?
If parents won't allow a student to sing, how do we assess their singing for a grade? Is that not a major part of our TEKS?
Assess them virtually
awesome ideas Jonathan and Kelly!
kip, I have children in this category. last semester, I did music appreciation, theory, history, composition for them.
Thank you, Jonathan and Kelly!
aside from identifying solfege and rhythms, how would you work on sight reading daily? Chanting? Singing?
@Allison Tilotta … you could do so much work with rhythm! In person or at home, they can count and clap.
but nobody else could use your room for 60 mins. so you cannot trade rooms unless a teacher has a prep period.
Thank you Kelly and Jonathan! THE JUST RECEIVED THE GUIDANCE LAST NIGHT FROM THERE DISTRICT!
Thoughts on still using originals from the choir library and choir folders in the folder cabinet, 1 student per folder?
that sounds like a best practice situation, having an EXTRA ROOM available!
Can you share a copy of the covid strategies for a reference?
We will put it on the Connections page...
If masks and shieds are used would you need as much time to clear the room of particles?
Yes, please share this Jed!
has TEA made it allowable to require students to wear masks?
Where is Dr. James Meadows from again?
Excluding students based on materials can be a slippery slope.
Are industrial use foggers an option for sanitation products —would that reduce the turn around time for safety?
What campus is going to have an extra room available? I would love one? With the social distancing and spacing- ALL of our rooms and large group areas will be used all day. Great idea.
will wearing a face shield only work?
Sara, that is exactly what I'm saying
@Amy Kessler … CDC says no. Local municipalities say yes.
Thank you SO much!
They are doing football too!
Thank you so much for sharing!
yes please! also instructions on how to access the online resources...
any research out there on the ceiling-mounted sanitizers?
Will you share emails of presenters?
How are we going to get incoming 6th graders to sing for us? I feel like they are scared in the beginning. Any ideas?
Flipgrid is Awesome!
I love the idea of kids signing up for private lessons for 6th graders! then we can help them open up!
@Bonnie Hulse Headphones are a wonderful tool. That way they drown out the idea they are singing alone
How did you deliver instruction to students without Internet/devices?
That's a great idea Kip
How many districts allow face to face? We were not allowed to be face to face. Every lesson pre-recorded and google class assignments for responses.
Kay Vanlandingham, our district provided laptops and hot spots to every student who didn't have them
Kay - great question. We had SOME that got a packet. But that has to be fixed right?
packets, Chrome books and hotspots,
In the smaller districts with limited internet access we have a whole different set of challenges. Title 1 also. Trying to really think outside the lines now.
Not having that closure was very hard.
MJ same. We have a lot of kids without internet, which is tricky. Not title one, but still a challenge.
I will say as a parent and working from home I was so overwhelmed with what my kids needed and work that we only did their core classes online. I never opened up music, pe, or art on their platforms. I talked to friends in the same boat and they didn't either. I am worried a lot of 5th grade students haven't had music since March.
Regarding time to "clear particles" for the next class, how do we protect ourselves as we remain in multiple batches of particles though we are masked. How does that work for us as instructors?
Our kiddos have limited internet, also.
Thank you for all of your ideas…
Kandi, that's why we need two classrooms so that we can go back and forth alternating class periods
a lot of our students didn't have reliable internet
we bought 1000 hotspots this spring, but local cable is offering $6 internet in east Harris County
That's not just a rural issue
About aerosolized particles, I usually have a diffuser going in my office at least with Thieves Oil or something similar.
Can we have diffusers?
Kip, we're not allowed to do that
That is unfortunate.
Quite a few of our kiddos had a computer at home, but there were 4-5 people sharing this computer. But the district still counted them as having access to a device.
will an air purifier work??
Our district has internet hubs on buses and they rotate in the lower and rural areas of our district. La Joya ISD
Thank you. I may have missed that point as I stepped away for a brief moment. Thank you. I see this meeting is being recorded. How soon will it be available to view. I'll go back and revisit that portion.
Get a HEPA filter...
The education foundation in Clear Creek ISD purchased hot spots for students. Consider reaching out to them?
I had a couple really dedicated students who called and wanted to sing and do a checkin over the phone at scheduled times (no internet)
even in my house, with my husband working from home, and 4 teenagers, I can't say that our internet is 100% 100% of the time
Bonnie- I don't think Katy ISD allows diffusers.
Thanks to everybody. This is good material.
We allowed students to record on their cell phone and send it. Most everyone has a phone.
Sara- I didn't think so
I set up a Google phone number and had them call me or I called them. I still did not get every student, but I sure tried. It is free to use the Google call and you can do it from a computer or phone
I want to ask for HEPA filters in my room. Air Purifiers
We have a Molekule at home, and it is wonderful
too $$ for school use though
Meeting recording should available in the morning. Link will be on the Connections page. https://www.tmea.org/resources/town-hall-archive
I did use Flipgrid when this happened because kids could use other family members phones, I also sent out “snail mail” to just keep connected to the kids
Create cd's or dvd's. Deliver or mail music. etc
Google Voice and Google Sites also help facilitate instruction and activities.
Virology experts say that HEPA filters do not work for Covid.
Our school district used school parking lots as hot spots
This has been wonderful! Thank you!!!
Thank you EVERY ONE!!!!!!
